Finding My Way Under the Brim: A Journey into Hat-Making in Mexico

For years, I’ve been drawn to the idea of hat-making—not the Pinterest-inspired "cut-and-paste" variety but the real, artful craft of creating a hat from scratch. There’s something magical about the hands-on techniques and the deep artistry that goes into a perfectly shaped brim or a meticulously chosen trim. So when the opportunity arose to learn from a master milliner here in Mexico, I jumped at the chance.

Last Saturday morning, I found myself gleefully knee-deep in the world of felts, brims, and trims, guided by none other than Rodrigo, a third-generation hat-maker whose skills have become legendary. Rodrigo, or “El Sombrerero,” as many affectionately call him, learned the craft from his grandfather in Northern Mexico, a man who passed down not just the technical skills but a deep reverence for the art of hat-making.

Rodrigo’s hats have gained fame for crowning the heads of some of Mexico’s most iconic bands, and his passion for the craft is evident in every movement of his hands. From selecting the perfect felt to shaping the crown and designing trims that elevate a hat into a personal statement, Rodrigo blends tradition with modern flair.

During the workshop, I learned how every hat tells a story—whether it’s through its bold brim, subtle stitching, or the way it fits just right. Rodrigo encouraged us to approach each piece with patience, care, and creativity. By the end of the session, I had a newfound appreciation for the dedication and artistry required to create something so simple yet so impactful.

As I walked out, proudly holding my first handcrafted hat, I realized that Rodrigo’s craft goes beyond fashion—it’s about legacy, storytelling, and the joy of creating something beautiful with your own two hands.

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at a craft that’s steeped in history and personality, I can’t recommend hat-making enough. Whether you’re after a new skill or simply an appreciation for the art, spending time with a talented fabricante de sombreros like Rodrigo will leave you inspired—and maybe even wearing your very own masterpiece.
